Lincolnshire Planes, Trains & Automobiles
A tour for those who love transport, nostalgia, or simply new and interesting places. During this tour, you will visit one of England’s most beautiful cities, as well as industrial towns, sleepy villages and quirky museums.
Friday: Day 1 A late morning departure from Somerset, as we make our way east to the Ramada Hotel in Grantham, our base for four nights.
Saturday: Day 2 - 'AIR' We travel initially to Coningsby for a visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, home of Spitfires, Hurricanes and a Lancaster Bomber from World War II. We continue to Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, a memorial to Bomber Command, and the only Airfield Museum in the country, recreated to its original design on original site.
Sunday: Day 3 - 'RAIL' We travel north to Newark, to the Trolleybus Museum, where buses are normally running. Then on to a unique railway, which runs within the grounds of a steelworks. We return to the hotel, via a stop in historic Gainsborough.
Monday: Day 4 - 'ROAD, RAIL & SAIL' Another fascinating day, the first visit being to a Bubble Car Museum, with over 70 examples of these quirky little cars, forerunners to today’s smart cars. We continue on, and allow some time in the beautiful city of Lincoln, overlooked by its magnificent cathedral. We return via Sleaford, and nearby Heckington, where the railway station was saved and lovingly restored by people of the village. Beside the station is the only eight sailed windmill in Western Europe, which still sails on open days.
Tuesday: Day 5 Time to start our journey home, however not before we make a visit to Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray, where we see a demonstration of pork pie making. We then have some time at leisure in Melton Mowbray before continuing home.
Our hotel: We stay at The Ramada Grantham Hotel, situated on the edge of the ancient 12th century market town of Grantham. All 89 bedrooms are en-suite, spacious and tastefully decorated. Other facilities include, colour television, direct dial telephone, hairdryer, trouser press and tea and coffee making facilities.
