England & Scotland Border Explorer

Staying at the Gilsland Hall Hotel, this holiday crosses counties and countries as we include a day in Northumbria, where we are guided through the history and heritage of Hadrian’s Wall, a day in the Lake District with a lake cruise and distillery visit plus a day in Scotland where we take part in a wedding re-enactment in Gretna Green!

We depart the West Country and head north to the Gilsland Hall Hotel in Brampton, Cumbria – our base for 5 nights.

After breakfast we meet our step-on-guide for a full day guided tour of Hadrian’s Wall and Hexham. We travel through the fabulous scenery of the beautiful Northumbria countryside, along the route of Hadrian’s Wall, as our expert guide relays the history and heritage of this World Heritage Site. We will visit the award winning Vindolanda Fort and Museum, one of Europe’s most important Roman archaeological sites.  Our visit includes entrance to the Roman Army Museum and we will learn all about the archaeological sites where live excavations take place (during summer) before enjoying free time for lunch here. In the afternoon, we visit the charming market town of Hexham characterised by its stone architecture, cobbled streets and historic buildings. We continue our tour along military road and will have the opportunity to see this magnificent wall at close quarters before returning to our hotel.

After breakfast we will drive through beautiful Lake District, taking a scenic drive along Ullswater, the second largest lake in the National Park. The Lake runs a serpentine course for eight miles through expansive vistas of the district’s highest mountains. We arrive at Pooley Bridge pier for an hour’s Ullswater steamer cruise to the south side of the lake to Glenridding. After our cruise, we will make our way to Keswick where we will have free time for lunch and a stroll around. Our final stop of the day is at The Lakes Distillery, England’s largest distillery making whiskey, gin and vodka, set in a stunning location next to Bassenthwaite Lake, where we will enjoy a guided tour and a tasting of three spirits!

Today we travel into Scotland and visit the award winning Porridge Museum in Eastriggs where the majority of munitions were produced during WW1 by an army of women determined to do their bit for the war effort. Our next visit is to the Gretna Green Blacksmiths Shop, the historic hotspot for elopements! We will experience a wedding re-enactment at The Gretna Green Story Exhibition, housed within the original blacksmiths cottage and workshop. The Blacksmith Guide takes on the role of the ‘Blacksmith Priest’ and with a little help from members of our group a re-enactment of the legendary event of a runaway wedding takes place! We will have free time for lunch and to visit the Blacksmith Shop which offers a wide selection of Scottish and local produce.

We spend a morning at leisure in Carlisle, before heading north back across the border and to Drumlanrig Castle a fine example of late 17th century Renaissance architecture, constructed from distinctive pink sandstone (the ‘Pink Palace’). We will enjoy a guided tour of the castle and view the grand reception rooms, magnificent staircases, ornate period features and cosy parlours which provide an intimate taste of life through the centuries. We visit the castle tea rooms where afternoon tea is served.

After breakfast we depart our hotel and begin our journey home.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
