Rochester Dickensian Christmas Festival

Rochester transforms into a feast of  Victorian delights during its Dickensian Christmas Festival, to the stunning backdrop of Rochester’s fairytale castle and cathedral, now almost forty years running.  Experience lamp-lit parades, the Seven Poor Travellers Procession and guaranteed snowfall in Rochester’s Dickensian Christmas. We also visit other popular Kentish attractions of Chatham  Dockyard and Leeds Castle alongside the City of Canterbury.

FRIDAY

A late morning departure from Somerset as we head east, initially to Windsor where we make the first stop of our tour.  We then continue east and to the Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel, our base for 4 nights.

SATURDAY

After breakfast we head to Rochester where the ancient streets have a knack for bringing Christmas to life, the way it has been preserved in tales like Dickens' classic masterpiece ‘A Christmas Carol’ telling the story of the diabolical Ebenezer Scrooge.  Each year, in the first weekend of December, a feast of traditional Victorian festivities awaits at the Dickensian Christmas Festival, where you can experience parades, street entertainment, readings, songs and dance. You’ll also see some familiar, fabled characters from Dickens’ much-loved stories, all set against the enchanting backdrop of Rochester’s fairytale cathedral, castle and historic centre.  Rochester Christmas Market will also be taking place in the beautiful grounds of Rochester Castle.  An array of craft and trade stalls offer visitors a wide variety of affordable festive gifts and hand-crafted goods, souvenirs and novelty stocking fillers. All this plus fantastic family entertainment and Yuletide festivities.

SUNDAY

We visit the city of Canterbury.  Whitefriars Square, in the city centre of Canterbury, is the location for the medieval city’s annual Christmas market. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere of the Yuletime market while relaxing with a glass of Gluhwein and listening to traditional Christmas music. There are a range of unusual Christmas gifts usually available. The shopping in Canterbury is superb with a wide selection of stores – just the place to pick up that elusive Christmas gift.

MONDAY

The Historic Dockyard at Chatham is one of Britain's leading maritime heritage destinations and the world's most complete dockyard from the Age of Sail.  Discover how ships, including HMS Victory, were designed and built.  Climb aboard a sloop, a destroyer and a submarine.  Get hands-on in the Ropery, where rigging for HMS Victory was made and where rope is still made today.  Explore galleries that unfurl the secrets of Great Britain’s magnificent maritime past and its command of the oceans.  Complete with a festive feel and Christmas shop there will be something to get everyone in the holiday spirit!

TUESDAY

Time to head for home, however not before one final visit to Leeds Castle near to Maidstone.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
