An atmospheric trip back in time

An atmospheric trip back in time

Our fabulous new tour explores a wealth of history and legendary landscapes of Nottinghamshire. The excursions include visiting the breathtaking Kelham Hall, browsing for bargains and treasures in Newark, cruising on the Trent River, walking in the footsteps of Robin Hood at Sherwood Forest New Visitor Centre and stepping back in time to glimpse how the less fortunate lived at Southwell Workhouse.

Tuesday - Day 1

Following your home pick up, you will meet up with your fellow passengers and we will head up the motorways to Nottingham, on the way we will stop at the award winning Gloucester Services for lunch. These services were the first family run motorway services on the UK roads. There are no franchises or fast food on the forecourts. Instead, a Farmshop selling locally produced food, a Butchery featuring meat reared from our own farms and a Kitchen serving homemade dishes produced daily using local ingredients. Proper food with locality and a sense of belonging is at the very heart of everything they do. They believe proper food matters. So they serve it where you’d least expect it - on the motorway. A final stop on route to the hotel at the National Memorial Arboretum to stretch your legs.

Wednesday - Day 2

This morning we take a tour of Kelham Hall, a beautiful stately home considered a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture and set within stunning parkland gardens. A local expert historian will relate its incredible history from being the ancestral home of the Manners-Sutton family through to its magnificent design plus its use as a Theological College by an Anglican Order of Monks and its significance during WWII. We also enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits while here. We make a stop in the picturesque town of Newark to visit the bustling market, perfectly positioned in a beautiful Georgian square lined with historic buildings and once the centre for the wool and cloth trades. In the afternoon we spend a relaxing two hours with afternoon tea on a scenic sightseeing Trent River Cruise.

Thursday - Day 3

This morning we enjoy an adventure at Sherwood Forest New Visitor Centre, gateway to this historic woodland with many beautiful trails and legendary home to Robin Hood, one of the world’s best loved folk heroes. We follow a trail through the forest to discover its most famous ancient resident, the Major Oak Tree. With a canopy spread of 28 metres this amazing tree is the oldest oak in Britain and fabled to have been used as shelter for Robin and his Merry Men as they outwitted the forces of the law. In the afternoon we indulge in a sobering social history visit at the atmospheric Southwell Workhouse. It offers a fascinating vignette of how the poor lived as we explore the rooms, vegetable garden and yards and find out about the role of the workhouse and how it evolved through time.

Friday - Day 4

After breakfast it is time for us to leave Nottingham behind as we load up the coach and via the motorways we make our way back down south and home. We head to the Cathedral city of Lichfield for our lunchtime stop. Lichfield is a vibrant and historic city with streets lined with museums, independent shops and mouth-watering restaurants. After lunch, we return to our coach meeting point where we will travel onwards to join up early evening with the feeder coaches that will continue your journey back home.
