Join us on a tour to the Anglo Saxon Sutton Hoo

As one of the most beautiful areas of England, Suffolk retains a quintessential charm that makes it a worthy addition to any programme. Our packaged itinerary takes in the delightful Suffolk coast, Anglo Saxon Sutton Hoo (filming location for the recent film “The Dig”), a scenic boat cruise with Deben Cruises aboard the MV Jahan, Ipswich Marina and a stunning garden.

Monday - Day 1

This morning we will make the journey to Suffolk with suitable comfort stops along the way. We start our holiday in Windsor, home to the Queen’s favourite residence, the largest inhabited castle in the World. Walk along the cobbled streets under the walls of the Castle, see Nell Gwynn’s House, the Crooked House teashop and Queen Charlotte Street, recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the shortest streets in England. We will arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Tuesday - Day 2

Today we enjoy a tour along the picturesque Suffolk coast, starting with a visit to Southwold, complete with its famous painted beach huts and lovely pier, before continuing to the pretty village of Thorpeness, with its pretty mock Tudor houses and the fairytale ‘House in the Clouds’. We enjoy free time here for lunch before continuing to Aldeburgh, which retains features from a bygone era.

Wednesday - Day 3

Today, we enjoy a guided tour at the world famous Anglo Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo, the hauntingly beautiful 255 acre estate which is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. We discover the story of the ship burial of an Anglo Saxon king, explore the award winning exhibition and the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber (please note, the walk to the burial mounds is a 10-15 minute outdoor walk on flat ground, passengers who are less mobile can visit the exhibition, café and small shop). In the afternoon, we make our way to Waldringfield where we enjoy a 2 hour cruise with tea/coffee and scones along the river Deben, one of the most beautiful and scenic spots on the east coast.

Thursday - Day 4

This morning, we enjoy free time relaxing and exploring the beautiful marina surrounding our hotel, before travelling to the spectacular Grade I Listed Helmingham Hall Gardens where we have time for lunch before exploring at our own pace. They themselves say that “It is hard to exaggerate the effect this beautiful park, with its red deer, spectacular moated Hall in mellow patterned red brick with its famous gardens will have on the visitor.” And they aren’t wrong, there’s a magical feel to this peaceful estate.

Friday - Day 5

After breakfast, we make our way home. Our final visit of the tour is to Bury St Edmunds. A Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk, surrounded by countryside with 1,000 years of history to explore, Bury St Edmunds - the home of Saint Edmund, the original patron Saint of England - offers award-winning food and drink, fantastic shopping, the arts, annual festivals, and stunning parks. We have a couple of hours here before rejoining the coach and continuing our journey back to the West Country.
