The reality of 'The Repair Shop'

You’ve seen it on TV, now see in person where the BBC2’s ‘The Repair Shop’ is filmed. Our holiday is based at the lovely Langstone Quays Resort on Hayling Island with stunning views across Langstone Harbour and Estuary. We will also see some of the best of Sussex’s South Downs as we also include the magnificent Arundel Castle, serene Parham House, the popular cities of Chichester and Brighton, and a tranquil cruise on the Wey and Arun Canal.

Monday - Day 1

We depart Somerset following your pick up from home and travel to the Langstone Quays Resort. We make our first stop in the former capital of Wessex, Winchester. Winchester is a city in the county of Hampshire, on the edge of England's South Downs National Park. It’s known for medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible and a Norman crypt. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur

Tuesday - Day 2

This morning, we make our way to the unique Weald & Downland Open Air Museum with its collection of over 50 original buildings spanning a period of 600 years. Site of the hugely popular BBC TV series ‘The Repair Shop’, we can spend the morning exploring this remarkable microcosm of South East English history in its authentic Wealden setting! Perhaps witness a Victorian smithy at work, cooking in a Tudor kitchen, a working watermill grinding flour and other workshop demonstrations. There is time to take lunch in the lakeside tea room, before we head to Chichester with plenty of time to explore.

Wednesday - Day 3

We start our day with a visit to Arundel Castle, set high on a hill commanding superb views across the South Downs and the River Arun. Famous not only for its finely preserved interior, fascinating furniture, tapestries and rare collection of paintings, the castle also has wonderful gardens. We start our visit by exploring the gardens which feature a colourful rose garden, quirky Stumpery, kitchen gardens and the architectural splendour of the Earl’s Garden before visiting the castle, its magnificent rooms and impressive private chapel. In the afternoon, we make our way to Brighton where we spend time at leisure visiting its famous attractions.

Thursday - Day 4

We enjoy a delightful 90 minute cruise on the Wey and Arun Canal this morning, cruising along the idyllic Loxwood Link section of the canal on the Surrey/West Sussex border. Departing from the Canal Centre in Loxwood, we enjoy a tranquil cruise taking in the picturesque scenery along the way. In the afternoon, we visit Parham House and Gardens, one of the country’s finest Elizabethan houses, complete with a Great Hall and Long Gallery. Set in 875 acres in the South Downs, the house is home to many rare and precious collections of paintings, furniture, needlework and antiquities. The spectacular gardens feature pleasure grounds, a four acre walled garden, stunning herbaceous borders, a glasshouse, vegetable garden, orchard and a 1920’s Wendy House.

Friday - Day 5

We return home to Somerset today, but we have time for one more visit. Our route back takes us through the New Forest to Bournemouth & Poole where we catch the "Bramble Bush Bay" chain ferry to Swanage for our final visit of the tour. Swanage has so much to offer everyone: a wealth of attractions to suit all ages, sporting and leisure activities, historic buildings and for the traditional seaside holiday there can be no better choice than Swanage. It is situated at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The attractive town hosts plenty of interesting shops. You will be spoilt for choice with numerous places to eat and drink. Choose from cosy tea rooms, serving Dorset cream teas, hearty pub grub, continental cuisine to eat in or take away, seafood specialities and traditional fish and chips.
