Join us a we travel over to the Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight may be just a few miles from the mainland, but it is a different world where the pace of life is decidedly slower and has one of the best sunshine records of any part of the UK. No passport is needed for the short ferry crossing, and once you're on the Island everything is within easy reach. All along the coast you will find quiet fishing harbours and seaside villages, along with stretches of golden sand and un-spoilt beaches. Inland you will find an abundance of winding paths, peaceful woods and rolling countryside with breath-taking views wherever you go.
Monday - Day 1
Journey to Portsmouth for the 10am short crossing to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. On the way to the hotel we will visit Monkey Haven. In 1999, the Founder, Don Walser, bought a muddy field on the Isle of Wight. He started planning a haven for rescued monkeys and birds of prey. Everyone thought he was mad, but he showed them! With the help of friends, family, and countless supporters, he turned it into an award winning animal sanctuary. There were a few thrills and spills along the way, and it took everyone to the brink, but this is a story with a fairytale ending. They have rescued hundreds of primates, birds, reptiles and other creatures in crisis. They have also won prestigious awards from VisitEngland, including a Gold Award, and they are in the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame.
Tuesday - Day 2
First stop today is Godshill Village with its charming thatched cottages, model village, gift shops and tea rooms. Then onto Brightstone, where an interesting stop can be made at Isle of Wight Pearl. Finally, no trip to the Isle of Wight would be complete without a visit to Alum Bay, famous for its multi coloured sand cliffs and breath taking views of the Needles and lighthouse.
Wednesday - Day 3
This morning explore Shanklin. The Old Village is full of picturesque cottages clustered around the thatched Crab Inn, many of which have become craft and gift shops. Take a stroll through the tranquil Shanklin Chime (cost not included) or head to the beach and Esplanade. After lunch travel to Ventnor Botanical Gardens. Basking in the microclimate of The Undercliff, these are one of the great gardens of Britain
Thursday - Day 4
Morning tour to the famous Osborne House, Queen Victoria's island retreat. Highlights include the lavishly furnished State Rooms and glorious grounds and gardens. Later travel to the award winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway for a special journey that will take you back in time. Vintage steam locomotives pull Victorian and Edwardian carriages, offering a unique view of some of the Island's unspoilt countryside.
Friday - Day 5
This morning, after breakfast, we will load the coach and make our journey back to the West Country using the Fishbourne to Portsmouth ferry. Not be before one final visit. We head to Quarr Abbey at Ryde for a visit to the monastery. Quarr is home to a small group of Benedictine monks who dedicate their lives to the glory of God. Explorer the visitors centre and find out about a day in the life of a monk or just enjoy a bit of piece and quiet on your own or with a cup of tea
