Welsh Borders Steam & Cruise

River cruises and steam trains, a classic combination.

River cruises and steam trains, a classic combination.

Where Shropshire meets Wales, enjoy a steam train ride through the beautiful Dee Valley and a relaxing cruise along the River Severn. We will visit the picturesque town of Llangollen with the river Dee running through its heart. Following the 100 year old tradition we take a horse drawn barge along the canal and then a train ride following the River Dee. Thursday sees us visit Hodnet Hall Gardens & Wollerton Old Hall. Finally we return home via the magnificent Black Country Museum

Monday - Day 1

Following your home pick up, you will meet up with your fellow passengers and we will head up the motorways to the Albrighton Hall Hotel. The first stop on our tour is in Hereford. Strolling along the banks of the River Wye, enjoying the vibrant centre of High Town, immersing yourself in our local history and historic architecture. With independent outlets sitting alongside well-known high street names, there is shopping for all in the traffic-free city centre. Or you may prefer to visit our historic black and white house museum, Cathedral and Mappa Mundi. We'll have lunch here before returning to the coach will then take us on the short journey to the Mercure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall Hotel for a 4 night stay.

Tuesday - Day 2

This morning we make our way to Shrewsbury to join the Sabrina for a river cruise that sails from the historic Victoria Quays. Whilst enjoying a gentle sail around the river Severn loop and up to the English bridge, make sure you take advantage of the photo opportunities, capturing the beautiful views of Shrewsbury’s riverside. As we head back in, our captain will entertain you with stories of the town, past and present. After the cruise, we have the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the delights that Shrewsbury has to offer, before re-joining the coach for our return to the hotel.

Wednesday - Day 3

Hodnet Hall Gardens Over 60 acres of brilliantly coloured flowers, magnificent forest trees, sweeping lawns and a chain of ornamental pools which run tranquilly along the cultivated garden valley to provide a natural habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. We then move onto to Wollerton Old Hall Gardens Set around a 16th Century Hall (not open to the public), Wollerton Old Hall is a formal, modern garden on an old site. Its garden rooms are richly planted with perennials and bursting with design ideas. The garden is renowned for its salvias, clematis and roses, growing in controlled exuberance, and the clever use of colour, form and scale

Thursday - Day 4

We explore the picturesque town of Llangollen with the River Dee running through its heart. Experience the peace and tranquillity of an included horse-drawn canal boat trip along the Llangollen Canal, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy Llangollen’s wealth of independent shops and take a stroll along Victoria Promenade, before we take a nostalgic trip back in time on the Llangollen Railway. The journey is a relaxing 10 miles travelling through the stunning Dee Valley to the lovely town of Corwen. The views from the carriages are breath-taking and constantly changing from season to season.

Friday - Day 5

Sadly, the time has come for our holiday to end, but not before one more visit. We visit the Black Country Living Museum. Here you'll see history brought to life before your eyes. You can explore over forty carefully reconstructed shops, houses and industrial areas that represent the Black Country's story. You'll learn how steam power, human ingenuity and an increasingly interconnected world transformed this region into a manufacturing powerhouse. You'll meet our historic characters who'll tell you stories of what it was really like to live and work during this revolutionary period of history.
