Visit York for a unique Yuletide experience with its narrow cobbled streets, medieval buildings, historic Shambles and magnificent Minster, which all help create a magical festive atmosphere in one of Europes most charismatic cities. Experience the magic of Christmas at Castle Howard. This enchanting home with its lavishly decorated rooms and stunning architecture, will be adorned with elegant decorations, whilst magnificent Christmas trees, decked with hundreds of baubles and lights, lead the way through the dramatic interiors, beautifully lit by fire and candlelight.
Monday - Day 1
Today we will make the journey to York, making suitable comfort stops along the way. We will arrive at the hotel with time to unpack and freshen up before dinner. Following your pick up from home, you will soon join the Main Coach and start your Yuletide holiday. Our lunchtime stop is in Derbyshire town of Chesterfield with it's crooked-spired cathederal. Monday is also Market Day.
Tuesday - Day 2
Christmas at Castle Howard – for us, Christmas would not be Christmas without a trip to Castle Howard! This year’s theme is Narnia. Step through the wardrobe into a magical adventure this festive season. An ice spell has been cast on this mystical land where it is always winter, but will Christmas spirits be restored and will warmth and joy return? The grand interiors of Castle Howard will be lavishly decorated, and a series of theatrical installations, lighting, projection and soundscapes will evoke all that we love about this special time of year, with the iconic 25 foot Christmas tree. Don't forget to wrap up warm.
Wednesday - Day 3
Today will be a day at leisure in York. The coach will leave the hotel in the late morning to travel the short distance to York. York is a beautiful city at any time of year, but its narrow Tudor streets and original old buildings make it feel extra special at Christmas. This ancient walled city has Roman roots and a Viking history, much of which is still visible in its street names, monuments, and museums. A guided tour of York Cathedral has been arranged if you like to participate. This is a beautiful and atmospheric city to visit at Christmas with festivities taking place day and night. It will be cold — this is the north of England — so be prepared to put on your gloves and scarf, but there’s plenty of Christmas cheer to warm you.
Thursday - Day 4
Today we will be visiting Deans Garden Centre that has been fully decorated for the Christmas season. Here you will find all sorts of gifts to be purchased for your family and friends. You will be able to get lunch here and enjoy the spectacular lights and decorations. Visit the Christmas departments and see the festive colour themed displays with modern and traditional decorations, indoor and outdoor lights, fibre optic and artificial Christmas trees, gifts, cards and so much more.
Friday - Day 5
After a warming cooked breakfast we will leave the hotel to commence our journey back to the West Country. Our last visit of the tour is to Nottingham Christmas, Old Market Square in Nottingham. Traditional chalet style market stalls will be trading along Long Row and Smithy Row offering a chance for some alternative Christmas shopping with a choice of gifts, crafts, and speciality food. Festive events will also spread to Trinity Square, where a specially-constructed Christmas Village with a number of food and drink options will see visitors entering via a Christmas Tree-lined entrance leading to a winter-themed setting that features a number of igloo-style glass domes. We spend a couple of hours here before returning home.
