Pies, Plants & Planes in the East Midlands

The East Midlands counties have a wealth of attractions within easy reach of our chosen hotel. We include a day in magnificent Lincoln, with an introductory guided tour and then free time. The second day we have included a visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre at RAF Coningsby, and on the final day a tour of the lovely open country around Oakham to Barnsdale Gardens by picturesque Rutland Water, and then to Melton Mowbray to learn how to make pork pies.

We travel via the motorways north to the Ramada Hotel Grantham, our base for 4 nights.  Upon arrival we will be welcomed with tea or coffee and biscuits.

Spend time in the historic Cathedral City of Lincoln, where the history and culture will be brought to life by an introductory guided tour. After our tour you can enjoy spending the day exploring the city and its attractions.  With a magnificent architectural heritage centered on its world famous cathedral and castle, Lincoln mixes 2000 years of history from cobbled streets and antiques to the modern art scattered throughout the city.  Have a wander around the Cathedral quarter and visit the impressive Cathedral – one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe.

Today we visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, a living memorial to the 55,500 men of Bomber Command who lost their lives during World War II.  In the afternoon we continue to visit the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Centre at RAF Conningsby which has welcomed over 300,000 visitors since opening its doors in 1986.  We will enjoy a 90 minute guided tour of the RAF BBMF Hangar which gives us the opportunity to see the Flight’s historic aircraft at close quarters and to observe the BBMF technicians working to maintain them in an airworthy condition.

We travel through the County of Rutland for an included visit to Barnsdale Gardens.  The gardens were created by TV Gardener Geoff Hamilton for the BBC’s “Gardeners World” programme.  The many individual gardens include avariety of designs, plant species and horticultural techniques.   We then continue on to the town of Melton Mowbray for an included visit to the renowned Dickinson and Morris Pork Pie Shoppe, with a demonstration and tasting of two of the UK’s most famous culinary exports:  Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese.

Time to depart Grantham and head for home.  We have one final visit on the tour to Burghley House, one of the greatest of Britain's non-royal palaces, a prodigy house built for Elizabeth I's Lord High Treasurer, Lord Burghley. His interiors include a Great Hall with hammerbeam roof and vaulted Old Kitchen. Later Earls of Exeter have endowed the building with magnificent collections (including perhaps the finest private collection of 17th century Italian paintings) and an opulent series of state rooms, including the famous Heaven Room painted by Verrio.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
