Hidden Gems of Lancashire & The Ribble Valley

Discover the atmospheric villages in the heart of the Ribble Valley and the heritage and history of Lancashire, where the past meets the present. Spend a day travelling through spectacular scenery, learn the fascinating story of the Pendle Witches and discover the best kept secrets of the medieval halls of Gawthorpe and Salmesbury, topped off with a visit to the wonderfully quirky Chocolate House in Blackburn. We stay at the Foxfields Hotel in the heart of the beautiful Ribble Valley with outstanding views of Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside.

Sunday - Day 1

Your home pick up will take you to meet the main tour coach where we all join up together before heading to the motorways to commence our journey to the north west. We will make suitable comfort stops along the way as we jpourney to the Foxfields Hotel near to the market town of Clitheroe. The hotel is situated in a picturesque location in the heart of the beautiful Ribble Valley amidst outstanding views of Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside.

Monday - Day 2

We spend the morning at leisure exploring the bustling market town of Clitheroe, a real gem for shoppers with it’s narrow cobbled streets, colourful courtyards and captivating gift shops. In the afternoon we visit the National Trust Elizabethan mansion of Gawthorpe, the ‘Downton Abbey of the North’, nestled in the shadow of Pendle Hill and famous for it’s original oak paneling and fabulous plasterwork. It also showcases the renowned Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, comprised of the most extraordinary needlework, quilts and embroidery from all over the world.

Tuesday - Day 3

Today we have a full day tour of the Ribble Valley and the Pendle Witch trail visiting a variety of Villages associated with the famous witch trials of 1612 and stopping at the Pendle Witch Museum. We’ll continue the scenic tour taking in Downham, made famous by the classic film Whistle down the Wind , past the grandeur of Tudor Stoneyhurst College, where JRR Tolken spent much of his time writing Lord of the Rings. Chipping, Newton in Bowland, Dunsop Bridge, and the unspoilt ancient village of Slaidburn owned by a single family for the past 200 years.

Wednesday - Day 4

Create delicious memories on a visit to the Chocolate House in Blackburn for a demonstration of the art of making hand made chocolates from an expert chocolatier. It is then to the medieval stately home of Salmesbury Hall, built in 1325 steeped in fascinating history, and still with its original typical medieval black and white exterior. Explore the 700 year old house from the parlour to the Great Hall and discover the secrets like the hidden priest hole, used for hiding Catholic priests in the reign of Elizabeth 1, and learn the story of Janey, the suspected witch.

Thursday – Day 5

After breakfast it is time for us to leave Yorkshire behind as we load up the coach and via the motorways we make our way back down south and home. We will make suitable comfort stops en-route heading back to our coach meeting point where we will join up early evening with the feeder coaches that will continue your journey back home.

Situated in the heart of the Ribble Valley, the Foxfields Country Hotel is dedicated to ensuring that guests have a welcoming and relaxed visit to the area. The hotel has a total of 44 guest rooms, alongside comprehensive leisure facilities that includes a swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and a small gym. The spa is fully available to guests between 7am and 10pm. All of the bedrooms are equipped with en-suite facilities (with a bath and a shower), wiFi, a flat screen television, a trouser press, a hair dryer and tea and coffee making facilities.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
