Railways and Gardens of Devon and Cornwall

You don’t have to be an enthusiast to enjoy the wonderful railways and scenery of Devon & Cornwall. This tour combines coach excursions with rail trips and garden visits. Our base is the great city of Plymouth so you get fascinating history and excellent shopping as well!

Sunday – Day 1
We cross the border into Devon and make our way to the Duke of Cornwall hotel in Plymouth, our base for 4 nights.

Monday – Day 2
We travel to Paignton for a ride on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.  Upon arrival in Kingswear take the little ferry over the Dart to the olde worlde port of Dartmouth.  Time to enjoy this lovely town before boarding a river boat for a ride up the scenic River Dart to Totnes.

Tuesday – Day 3
Today we visit Lanhydrock House, an impressive late Victorian home and gardens.  Following a fire in 1881 the owner Thomas Charles filed Lanhydrock with the latest technology, including state of the art ovens and warming cupboards in the kitchen and dining areas, central heating systems and fire hydrants.  We can see the fascinating contrast between the upstairs and downstairs worlds by exploring the kitchens and servants quarters as well as the grand family spaces.  After spending a relaxing time here we re-join the coach for the short drive to join the Bodmin and Wenford Railway at Bodmin General Station where we take a return journey to Boscarne Junction.

Wednesday – Day 4
We travel into Cornwall for a guided tour of the amazing Lost Gardens of Heligan.  Explore the wild and wonderful land of Heligan, Britain’s real life “secret garden” that was lost amongst weeds, rediscovered in 1990 and restored to its Victorian glory.  We then continue to the nearby fishing port of Looe, before we take a train ride up the pretty Looe Valley line to Liskeard

Thursday – Day 5
It’s time to depart the hotel however we still have an action packed day, starting with a train journey up the beautiful Tamar Estuary, to Gunnislake, before continuing to Tavistock, an ancient market town.  We then head to The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum.  Packed with plants and colours for all seasons, it is well worth visiting most of the year.  This is not a small garden and paths lead you through a range of borders with surprises and colour at every turn.

Hotel Information

The 3 star Duke Of Cornwall is a lovely old Victorian hotel in an excellent position between Plymouth's historic Hoe and  modern shopping streets. It was built in 1863 as the city's first luxury hotel and importantly remained undamaged during  the massive WWII blitz, allowing many wonderful features to be retained to this day.  All bedrooms are en-suite and are equipped with tea/coffee making facilities, television, telephone, hairdryer and alarm clock.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
