Railways of Kent & Sussex

During this tour we visit three railways within the Kent and East Sussex area. The Bluebell Railway was one of the first to be rescued from oblivion after 'Beeching' and is still among the best for recreating the feeling of the railway heyday. With very different scenery we also take a delightful journey on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, before our final ride takes us on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. However it isn't all railways and this lovely corner of England allows us to take in the picturesque towns of Tunbridge Wells, Hastings and Rye.

Sunday - Day 1

After your home pick up we meet up with your fellow travellers as we join the tour coach and head eastbound. Making a suitable comfort stop en-route we head to the National Trust property of Polesden Lacey - a country retreat with glorious views across the rolling Surrey Hills and acres of countryside waiting to be explored. It was the home to famous Edwardian hostess Mrs Greville, who entertained celebrities and royalty of her time. Explore her fabulous collection of art and ceramics. Then it is on to the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Felbridge.

Monday - Day 2

After breakfast we travel into East Grinstead where we board the train on the Bluebell Railway and travel to Sheffield Park. We then head to Sheffield Park Gardens, a magnificent landscaped garden laid out in the 18th century by 'capability' Brown and further developed in the early years of the 20th century by its owner, Arthur G Soames. The centrepiece is the original four lakes. We rejoin our coach and travel through the Ashdown Forest which AA Milne used to imagine scenes for his Winnie the Pooh books to the historic town of Royal Tunbridge Wells for a short visit.

Tuesday - Day 3

We visit Hastings, one of the medieval Cinque Ports, which has had long had a close relationship with the ocean, and although its fishing industry has declined, it still has Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet. Then it is on to our next railway - The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch - this railway runs for 13.5 miles from the picturesque Cinque Port town of Hythe, through the family friendly seaside village to Dymchurch, towards the railways headquarters at New Romney and finally reaching the National Nature Reserve of Dungeness.

Wednesday - Day 4

Today we depart the hotel and travel to Bodiam where we board the Kent & East Sussex Railway for a ride through the countryside to the ancient town of Tenterden. There will be some free time here before we rejoin our coach and travel to Rye. Rye's ancient medieval streets are clustered around a sandstone hillside, overlooking the meandering River Rother and Romney Marsh. Hundreds of years ago, Rye was surrounded on all sides by water and formed part of the medieval Cinque Ports with the town's hilltop vantage point useful for detecting and repelling marauding invaders.

Thursday – Day 5

We start our journey home via beautiful Lewes - the county town of Sussex and a mixture of the unusual and intriguing and so typically Sussex. Its medieval streets, old English churches and tiny alleyways allow visitors a glimpse into the true essence of bygone Lewes. It is a market town of small, specialist, independent retailers and on certain days, the subtle aromas wafting from Harvey’s Brewery will attract any visitor to Cliffe High Street. We then continue our journey back to the coach meeting point where you join the feeder vehicles to take you back home.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
