Shropshire and Welsh Borders Steam and Cruise

Shropshire must surely be one of England’s hidden gems lying on the border with Wales and set on a backcloth of patchwork fields, wooded valleys, picturesque rivers and rolling hills leading in to the Welsh Marches. Unspoilt countryside, lovely medieval towns and a remarkable heritage are all there to be enjoyed.  Experience delights including the literally gorgeous Severn Gorge and the spectacular borderland where the mountains of Wales provide a perfect backdrop. Discover historical Ironbridge, a memorable canal cruise and train journey.

Sunday - Day 1

The first stop on our tour is in Worcester, a city with a fascinating history of industry, a wealth of interesting architecture and an unrivalled selection of high street names and independent boutiques.  We then head to nearby Kidderminster where we join the Severn Valley Railway.  Sit back and admire the scenery of the Worcestershire and Shropshire countryside as the railway hugs the Severn Valley on its way to the town of Bridgnorth.  The coach will meet us in Bridgnorth and then take us on the short journey to the Mecure Shrewsbury Albrighton Hall Hotel for a 4 night stay.

Monday - Day 2

We travel to the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important centre’s of the industrial revolution and now a delightful town of tea rooms, antique shops and, of course, the iconic bridge.  We then visit Blists Hill where you will be welcomed to the age of Queen Victoria.  Here you’ll experience what life was like when Britain ruled the world.  Meet some (almost) real Victorians in their authentic shops and cottages, buy curious goods from a bygone era and watch tradespeople in action in their atmospheric workshops and factories.

Tuesday - Day 3

We explore the picturesque town of Llangollen with the River Dee running through its heart.  Experience the peace and tranquillity of an included horse-drawn canal boat trip along the Llangollen Canal, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Enjoy Llangollen’s wealth of independent shops and take a stroll along Victoria Promenade, before we take a nostalgic trip back in time on the Llangollen Railway.  The journey is a relaxing 10 miles travelling through the stunning Dee Valley to the lovely town of Corwen.  The views from our carriages are breathtaking and constantly changing from season to season.

Wednesday - Day 4

We make our way to Shrewsbury a town founded by the Saxons and most extensively developed by Tudors.  Shrewsbury town lies within a giant loop of the River Severn and is one England’s finest medieval market towns with over 600 listed buildings including many black and white half-timbered Tudor buildings.  Sit back and relax on a 40 minute cruise along the River Severn, before exploring this lovely town which was the birthplace of Charles Darwin. Shrewsbury is home to a Norman castle, an Abbey and The Quarry, which at its heart lies The Dingle, a floral masterpiece designed by the famous gardener Percy Thrower.

Thursday - Day 5

We load the coach and depart the hotel but ahead of the journey home there is still time for one more attraction - Powis Castle.  Powis began its life as a medieval fortress - we spend time exploring the magnificent collections contained in the castle and its world famous garden, with spectacular yew hedges and lavish herbaceous borders, as well as a superb collection of treasures from India displayed in the Clive Museum.  Early afternoon it is back aboard the coach and making suitable stops en-route we make our way south to meet up with the feeder coaches who will conclude your journey back home.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
