The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg – a grand title for a grand little country.  The country’s capital may be best known for being a business and financial centre, however Luxembourg City has an attractive historic, UNIESCO-listed Old Town just waiting to be discovered.  The rest of the country is a delightful mix of medieval castles, forested hills and a valley known as ‘Little Switzerland’ and in the south east the River Moselle.  In this tour we have combined all of that and added in a hop across the border to Germany to visit the Roman town of Trier – all in all a Grand Tour !

Sunday– Day 1

We had to Folkestone for the short Channel Tunnel crossing to Calais, from where we head south through the Low Countries and to the Grand Hotel de Vianden in the small town of Vianden, our base for 5 nights.

Monday - Day 2

We spend the day in our host town of Vianden.  Walk down to the River Our to see one of Luxembourg’s most photogenic scenes.  Walk along the cobbled Grand Rue with its attractive house and little shops as we head to the imposing Vianden Castle, towering over the town and the river.  Dating from the 10th Century, the castle fell into ruin in the 18th Century but today it is now restored and is one of Luxembourg’s most visited attractions.

Tuesday – Day 3

An excursion to the town of Grevenmacher on the River Mosel. Set in splendid scenery Grevenmacher is an important wine-growing centre, so whilst we are here you have a chance to sample some of the local produce with a wine tasting tour at Caves Bernard-Massard.

Wednesday - Day 4

We head to Luxembourg City to explore the capital of the Grand Duchy.  We have a walking tour of the city in the morning followed by time for you to explore at your own leisure in the afternoon.  Sights include Luxembourg Castle Ruins, the Grand Ducal Palace and the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

Thursday - Day 5

We head just across the German border into the Roman town of Trier, the oldest city in Germany.  Once the regional Roman capital it offers a host of well-preserved reminders of the bygone days with its amphitheater and thermal baths.

Friday – Day 6

Time to leave Luxembourg behind as we return to Calais for the short Channel tunnel crossing back to the UK, and homeward bound from there.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
