Delightful Durham and the Historic North East

The beautiful city of Durham, with its Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site, is the jewel in the crown of an extraordinary county.  We discover what this magical North East corner of England has to offer, with its quaint market towns and delightful villages described as a haven for peace and tranquility.  The area boasts some of the country’s finest countryside and coastlines, whilst the area’s turbulent history has also left its mark on the landscape with its numerous castles and fortifications.

SUNDAY

Via motorways we make our way to the North East of England and the Redworth Hall Hotel at Newton Aycliffe.  Upon arrival at our hotel, we will enjoy a welcome tea or coffee whilst our bags are taken to our room.

MONDAY

Today we have a morning at leisure in the historic city of Durham. Explore its winding cobbled streets, dramatic architecture and fantastic visitor attractions.  Take the chance to experience one of the finest surviving examples of Romanesque architecture at the beautiful Durham Cathedral.  In the afternoon we take a short walk from Durham City’s bustling market place to Crook Hall and Gardens - this 13th century Grade I listed medieval hall provides a spectacular backdrop to the stunning gardens.

TUESDAY

We meet up with a Blue Badge Tour Guide and embark on a full day excursion touring through the delightful Durham Dales.  Incorporating Teesdale and Weardale the Durham Dales are a peaceful and tranquil landscape of moors and hills, valleys and meandering rivers, dotted with picturesque villages and market towns that form part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

WEDNESDAY

Today we visit Wallington House an impressive Georgian house populated with a fascinating collection of treasures, set within a beautiful estate that includes a hidden walled garden. A guide will greet us on arrival and provide us with a 10 minute introductory talk on the history of the house in order to set the scene. In the afternoon we will make our way to Cragside House and Gardens, former home of the famous inventor, Lord Armstrong. In 1878, Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity and it is crammed full of ingenious gadgets – most of them still working – as well as an eclectic collection of British art, furniture, ceramics and natural history. Outside the house, one of the largest rock gardens in Europe leads down to the Iron Bridge, which in turn leads to the formal garden. Please note that the terrain at Cragside House is uneven with steep footpaths, many of which are unsuitable for wheelchair

THURSDAY

We visit the Living Museum of the North - Beamish. This famous open air museum, set within 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside, tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. We will experience town life as it would have been in the 1940s during World War 2, visit a 1940s farm, pop into the Colliery and the Pit Village in the early 1900s and take unlimited free rides on the Beamish tram.

FRIDAY

After breakfast we depart our hotel and begin our journey home.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
