England's Backbone - The Pennines

The Pennines run for approximately 200 miles from the Peak District to the south to the Scottish Borders in the north and are sometimes known as England's backbone. The region is widely considered to be one of the most scenic areas of the United Kingdom. Nestled into the scenic hills ae historic mill towns and pretty villages and the hills are criss-crossed by canals and railways, once our industrial lifelines but now providing wonderfully nostalgic visits.

Via the motorways we head north, making the first stop of the tour at the World of Wedgwood in Stoke on Trent. Here we will see the skilled craftsmen at work utilising unique artisian skills and techniques honed over 250 years at the home of Wedgwood. We enjoy a tour which offers an in depth view of all aspects of quality ceramic production including casting, figure making, pattern decorating and hand painting, ornamentation and gliding. We then continue to The Old Golf House Hotel, to the west of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.

We cross from White Rose into Red Rose country for a visit to the Pendle Heritage Centre. Set in the midst of the rolling Lancashire Hills and centre tells the fascinating story of the Pendle Witch Trials. We then continue through moorland scenery to the town of Skipton - this wonderful historic market town is situated in the heart of the beautiful Pennines with its superbly preserved 900 year old medieval Castle. From here you join an afternoon boat cruise travelling on board a beautiful, traditional, canal narrow boat. During the hour long trip the skipper unravels the captivating tale of the canal while passing through the varied scenery, mill buildings and the many bridges.

We travel through some Yorkshire countryside for a ride on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Trains are often steam hauled and pass through Oakworth, a little station made famous by thr 1970's film 'The Railway Children'. We take a return trip to Oxenhope, before re-joining the coach and travelling to Haworth, home of the profilic Bronte family of writers. We visit their home, The Parsonage before we meet up with a guide who will show us aruond the village, revealing what it was like in the Brontes day, and disclosing some of its many secrets.

We depart the hotel and travel first to Esholt - the village formerly used as the setting for the setting for the popuar televsion soap 'Emmerdale'. After a short visit we travel to the historic spa town of Harrogate with its magnificent Victorian buildings, colourful banks of flowers, broad tree lined boulevards and wide open spaces - don't forget to visit the famous Betty's tea rooms. In the afternoon we continue to neaby Ripley Castle. Steeped in history, yet timeless, Ripley Castle has belonged to the Ingilby family since 1308 and is still their family home today.  Throughout the ages, this ancient family has played a vivid part in English History. Uncover colourful tales of Ripleys past as you tour the medieval gatehouse, the Tudor tower and the elegant Georgian rooms. Stroll through picturesque gardens and admire deer grazing in the landscaped estate.

We start our journey home, initially travelling to the town of Holmfirth, scene of the comedy series 'Last of the Summer Wine'. Why not walk around the town which will reveal 'Nora Barry's Cottage', 'Sid's Cafe' and other sites familiar to fans of the series. We then rejoin the coach and continue our journey home.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
