Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight may be just a few miles from the mainland, but it is a different world where the pace of life is decidedly slower and has one of the best sunshine records of any part of the UK.  No passport is needed for the short ferry crossing, and once you're on the Island everything is within easy reach.  All along the coast you will find quiet fishing harbours and seaside villages, along with stretches of golden sand and un-spoilt beaches.  Inland you will find an abundance of winding paths, peaceful woods and rolling countryside with breath-taking views wherever you go.

TUESDAY
We make our way to Portsmouth for the short ferry crossing to Fishbourne.  We then travel to nearby Ryde - the largest town on the Isle of Wight with a large sandy seafront as well as a great selection of boutique shops, galleries and museums.  Stroll along the esplanade where you will find plenty of activities to do.  Ryde Pier is the oldest seaside pier in the country having been built in 1814. It is also the second longest pier at just under ½ a mile long.   We re-join the coach and visit nearby Quarr Abbey - home to a small group of Benedictine monks.  You can visit the church and wander around the grounds to experience the tranquil atmosphere, visit the art gallery where local artists display their artwork or browse the bookshop.  The Visitor Centre is designed to provide an inspiring and informative introduction to the monastic way of life and the beautiful and historic estate where they live.   We continue to Sandown and the Trouville Hotel, our base for 4 nights.

WEDNESDAY
We travel to Brightstone where we make an interesting stop at the Isle of Wight Pearl Factory, before a visit to Alum Bay, famous for its multi coloured sands and breath-taking views of the Needles and lighthouse.  Then it is onto Mottistone Gardens, which is in the care of the National Trust, is one of the most peaceful and magical gardens on the Island with colourful borders, shrub filled banks and grassy terraces which surround an Elizabethan manor house (tenanted). The garden has been selected by the Trust to test which plants will adapt to our changing climate and following the planting of 25 olive trees in 2005 the head gardener has been experimenting with plants from the Mediterranean and southern hemisphere.

THURSDAY
We visit the Ventnor Botanical Gardens, basking in the microclimate of The Undercliff – these are one of the great gardens of Britain.  We then move onto Shanklin, the Old Village is full of picturesque cottages clustered around the thatched Crab Inn, many of which have become craft and gift shops.  Early afternoon we then return to Sandown where we enjoy the remainder of our day at leisure exploring our host resort.

FRIDAY
We spend the morning touring the famous Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s island retreat.  Highlights of Osborne House include the lavishly furnished State Rooms and glorious grounds and gardens.   Then it is onto Brading and the Roman Villa, one of the finest Roman sites in the UK. The award winning Visitor Centre and Museum offers a unique insight into Roman life in Britain from beautifully preserved mosaic floors to an extensive collection of Roman archaeology

SATURDAY
Time to commence our journey home, however en-route we visit the award winning Isle of Wight steam railway for a special journey that will take you back in time, vintage steam locomotives pull Victorian and Edwardian carriages offering a unique view of some of the Island’s unspoilt countryside.  We then make our lunch stop in Godshill - this picture postcard village, with its thatched cottages, quaint tea rooms and model village!  This quintessential English village has a delightful medieval church and a winding main-street lined with traditional tearooms.  Then it is onto Yarmouth ahead of the mid-afternoon short ferry crossing back to Lymington, and from there it is homeward bound.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
