Lakes and Dales

From the panoramic golden sands to the Lakeland Hills beyond, Morecambe’s charms go on and on.  There’s a lot to see and do in this historic seaside town.  Jump on an open top bus for a tour, have a coffee or an ice cream in one of the cafes lining the seafront or visit the Eric Morecambe statue, forever brining sunshine to the Promenade!  We return to the Auckland Hotel in Morecambe and as well as Morecambe enjoy the lovely scenery of these two National Parks.

We travel via the motorways north to the Auckland Hotel in Morecambe, our base for 5 nights.

A leisurely morning as we spend some time at leisure in our host resort of Morecambe.  View the bronzed statue of Eric Morecambe, the town’s best-loved export and the many bird sculptures created by the Tern Project.  In town, enjoy excellent shopping and the traditional Lancashire welcome and hospitality extended to all visitors.  In the afternoon we visit the nearby city of Lancaster.  Lancaster is a vibrant university city with a wealth of history beginning its life as a Roman Fort in 80AD.  Its cobbled streets are lined with smart stone houses, filled with lively bars, shops and restaurants.

We head into the Lake District and to Ravenglass where for over 125 years, small engines have hauled narrow-gauge trains from this delightful Cumbrian coastal town through spectacular Eskdale scenery. Today, we travel through to Dalegarth, before re-joining our coach and travelling to the historic Muncaster Castle, with its Great Hall, octagonal library, ghosts, 77 acres of wild woodland gardens, 12th century church and world owl centre.

After a leisurely breakfast we make our way to Skipton – the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, where on Wednesday it is Market day.  Skipton Market is unique, its history dates back to medieval times, when a royal charter granted consent to The Lord of the Honour of Skipton Castle to hold a fair on Skipton High Street. This consent still holds true today - and the current owner of Skipton Castle grants the rights to hold the market on four days each week.  In the afternoon we enjoy an included 1 hour canal cruise on the Skipton Canal.

We visit Kendal, a lively market town with specialty shops in cobbled streets and yards.  Historic Kendal was one of the most important woolen textile centres in England; its numerous yards were once filled with workshops processing cloth, leather and foodstuffs.   Kendal has lots of things to do in and around the town: a tempting choice of cozy tearooms, pavement cafés, traditional Kendal pubs or stylish Kendal restaurants. Friday of each month. The award-winning Leighton Hall is the home of the famous furniture-making Gillow family.  This historic house, with its Gothic towers, enjoys a spectacular setting near to Carnforth.  The hall boasts many stunning and unique examples of Gillow furniture.  Unlike many historic houses Leighton Hall has no roped off areas, and you are free to wander and even sit on the furniture whilst being shown around by one of the enthusiastic guides!  You can then explore the 1600 acres of gardens and grounds at your own pace, before every day late afternoon there are flying displays by the resident birds of prey – while the birds soar overhead the falconer will provide a commentary covering their training, feeding and hunting habits.

Time to depart Morecambe and via the motorways we make our way back home to Somerset..

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
