Steam Railways of Scotland

Riding on steam trains almost seems synonymous with Scottish highland scenery.  On this tour we take in three steam train rides, two in the Highlands and one near Edinburgh.  It’s not all trains though!  Time will be spent visiting some of Scotland’s beautiful scenic spots and traditional towns.

We commence our long journey north to the Erskine Bridge Hotel to the north west of Glasgow where we stay for an overnight stop.

The beautiful scenery starts almost immediately as we drive alongside Loch Lomond, stopping in the pretty village of Luss.  We continue through the Highlands and the dramatic Pass of Glencoe where there is an interesting visitor centre.  The last leg takes us past the beautiful Loch Leven and to the town of Fort William which is overlooked by the UK’s highest mountain Ben Nevis.  We continue to the Alexandra Hotel, out base for 4 nights.

Our first steam ride of the tour is the most famous as we board ‘The Jacobite’ at Fort William for our journey to Mallaig, the wonderful ‘Road to the Isles’.  We’ll pass over the Glenfinnan viaduct, much photographed and filmed including its appearances in the Harry Potter films.  After some time in Mallaig where you can take in views of the Isle of Skye we’ll re-join our train for the trip back to Fort William.

We head to Urquhart Castle and discover over 1,000 years of drama, experience a glimpse of medieval life and enjoy stunning views over Loch Ness from the ruins of the greatest castle in the Highlands.  The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage and the site has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in Scottish history. In the afternoon we head to Fort Augustus and take to the water for a 1 hour return trip on Loch Ness.  Sit back as we cruise past Cherry Island, the loch’s only island and spoil you with a loch-side view of the striking Fort Augustus Abbey.

We travel into the Spey Valley, close to Scotland’s other famous mountain range, The Cairngorms.  From the once famous ski resort of Aviemore we join our second steam train ride along the Spey Valley to Broomhill where we’ll re-board the coach.  Sometime will be available in the Highland’s capital of Inverness before we head down alongside Loch Ness to Fort William.

We enjoy some time exploring our host resort of Fort William, before we leave the hotel and head south, travelling to Killin for a stop at the lovely Falls of Dochart.  We continue to the proud city of Stirling with its dramatic Castle holding court over the surrounding area.  We then continue to the Best Western Park Hotel at Falkirk where we are booked in for a 2 night stay.

Our third railway journey is on the Bo’Ness and Kinneil Railway which takes us close to the Firth of Forth near to Edinburgh.  We re-join the coach and then head into Scotland’s capital for the remainder of the day at leisure.  With its imposing Castle, the Royal Mile, Princes Street and the Palace of Holyrood House the official Scottish residence of the Queen – there are plenty of choices of things for you to see and to do.

We journey through the delightful Scottish Lowlands, back across the English border as we continue our journey.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
