The Dutch Bulbfields

Holland is known as the land of flowers, famous for its tulips that blossom in an explosion of colour each year.  A springtime visit to the Dutch Bulbfields is always worthwhile, we include a trip to the ever popular Keukenhof which is one of the world’s largest flower gardens with over 7 million flower bulbs in bloom.  We also visit some of the towns and cities that make up the Netherlands, Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Enihuizen plus the trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to a cheese and clog factory!

Sunday - Day 1

We head east initially to Audley End House and Gardens in Saffron Walden, explore this decadent Jacobean mansion house and meet the staff in the Victorian Service Wing.  Enjoy stunning views across the unspoilt Essex countryside and wander the tranquil gardens created by ‘Capability’ Brown, gold winner of Anglia in Bloom Awards 2017.  We continue to the ferry terminal in Harwich for the overnight ferry crossing to Hook of Holland.  En-route we will make a stop for our two course evening meal at a local restaurant.

Monday - Day 2

After your breakfast is served on board the ferry we disembark and then make our way to the cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam.  Here you will have a full day free to explore the Dutch capital at your own leisure.  Enjoy the historic buildings, beautiful museums and pleasant ambiance.  Perhaps go for a boat tour on the canals, stroll through Vondelpark, and go shopping in the inner city. Amsterdam is a unique city!  Back aboard the coach and we head to the Alidahoeve cheese and clog factory before finishing our day at the Van der Valk Hotel in Leusden, our base for 3 nights.

Tuesday - Day 3

We travel to Keukenhof Gardens where you can explore and marvel at the vast array of flowers.  Don't forget you can order bulbs to be sent to you at time of planting to make your garden at home the envy of the neighbours!  More than 7 million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths create a spectacular display in the so called Garden of Europe.  Then it is onto Zaanse Schans, a living and working community that dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Watch traditional crafts such as clog and cheese making or visit the windmills and traditional buildings. Local charges apply for some attractions.

Wednesday - Day 4

We cross the Houtribdijk - a 27 km dike that links the two cities of Lelystad and Enzhuisen Marken.  We then head to Zuiderzeemuseum which is located in more than 130 authentic houses, shops and workshops and shows the history and culture of this unique region.  Much attention is given to the past, present and future of the area in relation to such themes as water, traditional crafts and communities.  We visit Volendham, once a busy harbour specialising in the herring trade, it is now a perfect example of traditional Holland where many locals still wear National costume.  Back aboard the coach and we head to the Alidahoeve cheese and clog factory

Thursday - Day 5

Time to load the coach as we head across the Belgian border initally to the town of Antwerp.  The old city centre is steeped in history. You will find it in ancient building-fronts on narrow streets or in the imposing Grand-Place. The Plantin-Moretus Museum is the only museum in the world to be classified as a Unesco World Heritage site. In the shadow of the Cathedral of Our Lady, the city teems with life in intimate pubs and restaurants. The banks of the Scheldt are a great place for a breath of fresh air.  We then continue to the Velotel Bruges for an overnight stay.

Friday - Day 6

Following a hearty breakfast, we have the chance to explore the late morning in the historic city of Bruges - it is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site which is full of beautiful buildings, churches and canals.  We then load the coach up and head back across the border into France.  If time allows we will make a short stop at Cite Europe, before heading the the Eurotunnel terminal in Calais for the short Channel Tunnel crossing to Folkestone and from there via the motorways back to the South West.

About Our Tours

We have been operating tours and mini breaks around the U.K. and abroad for a number of years, and by far the most popular innovation that we have introduced in recent years, is to offer a virtually door to door service. Picking up as near as practically possible to your home in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire means you don’t have to worry about getting your luggage to the coach, and avoids the additional cost of having to use taxis.

By using our small fleet of mini-buses, we are able to keep the pick-up time to a minimum and get you on your tour coach and on your way as soon as possible. This way your holiday starts on the first morning. Once your holiday is over we will collect you again from the coach park and return you home.
